Inner
Mongolia University, founded in1957, was the first comprehensive university
built by the Party and
government after the founding of New China in the regions where the minority
nationalities exercise regional
autonomy and now is the only key national-level university in the Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region.
The
Party Central Cnmmittee and the State Council attached great importance
to the establishment ofInner Mongolia University . Following Premier Zhou
Enlai
paid close attention to the establishment Inner Mongolia University in the
national working conference of the minority nationalities in August,1957.
The former Ministry of Higher Education invited and
transferred from12 other
universities in the country(such as Beijing University,Nankai University,Fudan
University and Xiamen University) a large number of excellent teachers who
constituted the first faculty of the Inner Mongolia University.
Ulanhu,
former Vice-Chairman of the People's Repubilc of China , Vice-Premier of the
State Council
and Chairman of the People's Government of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
was concurrently first
President of Inner Monglia University.

Now
the University consists of 14 colleges and faculties(altogher 32 departments)
and another 2 independent departments for general education, covering 45 undergraduate
programs, as well as 9 key disciplines either of national or regional level.Thirty-nine
disciplines are authorized to grant master's degree(including one for MBA),
and 6 to grant doctor's degree. Three post-doctorate working stations are
located in the University as well. Quite a complete structure of disciplines
and majors has been established, covering such fields as philosophy, history,
law, science, engineering, enconomics, management, and art. 
A four-level educational system, including three-year
, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, has been formed.In addtion,
preparatory education programs have been established to enroll students of
minority nationalities. International and part-time students are also admitted.
Among the 14438 students on compus, Mongolian students and students of other
minority nationalities account for 35 per cent of the total.Since the inception
for the "211 Project" in 1993 ,the University has been making more
efforts in its educational reform and obtained much achievements meanwhile.
Now all the staff members are working
hard to rebuild their university in the hope that the university will rank
first among the universities of the same kind in the country and some of the
key disciplines will be entitled to be rated among the adbanced state-level
or world-level disciplines at the beginning of next century.
