The project proposal conference on the Collection and Studies of the Literature of the Silk Road of the Tang Dynasty, a key project of philosophy and social sciences of the Ministry of Education was held at IMU on May 22, 2021. Experts present at the conference included Xue Tianwei, Distinguished Professor of Renmin University of China and former president of Xinjiang Normal University, Tang Xiaoqing, research fellow of the Institute of Ethnic Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Liao Kebin, Chang Jiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education and professor of Peking University, Wang Zhipeng, research fellow of the Dunhuang Academy and Prof. Li Shuxin, director of the Faculty of Humanities of IMU. Persons in charge of the sub-project of the project including Prof. Yang Xiaoai from Lanzhou University of Technology, Prof. Lu Yanxin from the School of Literature of Nankai University and Dr. Wu Jun, assistant research fellow from the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as well as Dr. Wang Guibao from the School of Humanities of Hebei University of Engineering, a key member of the sub-project, were present at the conference. Prof. Erhimbayar, vice president of IMU, attended the conference. Prof. Wei Yonggui, dean of the College of Literature, Journalism & Communication of IMU, chaired the conference, and Wu Shuanhu, vice director of the Department of Publicity of the CPC Committee of IMU, Prof. Mi Yanqing, vice dean of the College, Prof. Liu Zhizhong, associate professor. Fu Jianrong, vice head of the Department of the Chinese Language, associate professor. Zhao Le and some other faculty members and students of the college attended the conference.

The conference
In his speech at the conference, Prof. Erhimbayar, vice president of IMU, extended welcome and thanks to the experts for their presence, and expressed congratulations to the research team on obtaining a key project of philosophy and social sciences of the Ministry of Education. With the implementation of the construction of Double First-Class and Joint Construction by the Ministry and the Autonomous Region, the scientific researches and disciplinary construction of IMU have entered a new stage of development. The approval of the project further enhances the strength and influence of IMU in researches in humanities and social sciences. IMU will commit itself to building a platform for the chief expert of the project and provide favorable environment of research and funds needed for the research to ensure the project be completed on schedule.

Prof. Gao Jianxin of the College of Literature, Journalism & Communication of IMU and chief expert of the project, gave a report to the board of experts on the project’s scope of research, academic value, the designing of sub-projects and their relationship, etc. Prof. Xue Tianwei, head of the board of experts, and other members of the board of experts, agreed that project was of distinct features and considerably high theoretical and academic values. They commented that the research of the project would lead to a better understanding of the openness and grandeur of the Tang dynasty, a more scientific revelation of the cultural character and aesthetic pursuit of the people living in Tang dynasty, and new insights and inspirations for the studies of ancient literature. Members of the board of experts gave a lot of constructive suggestions on the orientations, methodologies and some specific issues to the project team, who responded by asserting that they would fully consider the suggestions, and would commit themselves to yielding achievements of supreme quality as soon as possible to make contributions to the country’s cultural construction. The board of experts agreed unanimously that the proposal of the project was approved.

Experts present at the conference
Of the 51 key projects of philosophy and social sciences of the Ministry of Education in 2020, Collection and Studies of the Literature of the Silk Road of the Tang Dynasty is the only one focusing on the studies of ancient Chinese literature and culture. As the third key project of the Ministry of Education IMU has obtained and the first of its kind in the autonomous region, the project fills the blank of IMU in the 13th Five-year Plan and drew attention of the academia.
