IMU’s 2023 program for studies of its students at the University of Auckland in summer holiday implemented

    From July 15 to August 11, 2023, IMU’s 2023 program for studies of its students at the University of Auckland(UA) in summer holiday was implemented. 25 undergraduate students and posthraduate students who are from the disciplines and majors of IMU listed under “Double-First-Class Initiative” participated in the 4-week program in the summer holiday. They were led by Mr. Li Xinyu with the School of Life Sciences of IMU.

The courses for the program were organized and managed by English Language Academy(ELA) of UA and were taught in small-sized classes, which made the students of IMU have extensive communication and interaction with international students. According their English proficiency, the students were divided into different classes for different-level courses, which helped the students consolidate their basic English capabilities and improve their English skills. There were about 20 hours of theoretical courses every week, which was taught by high-quality and experienced teachers of  ELA. The courses focused on the development of the students’ skills of communication. The students steadily enhanced their English skills with class activities, independent learning, group pairing and group interaction.

Besides courses, the students were organized to visit the Faculty of Science of UA and know about the research and practice of the disciplines concerned at UA, which increased the students’ specialized knowledge and enriched their experience. Additionally, UA organized the students to tour the town of Hobbiton to appreciate the local culture and customs and to visit such renowned scenic spots like Sky Tower, which made students further experience the charm of Auckland City.

All the students were present in all classes and went through the test and completed the study of courses and got course-completion certificates. In their summaries about their opinions of the program, they summarized their own gains. They thought highly of the program. They thought the courses were interesting and rich in content and the teaching approaches flexible, which helped the students improve their language communication skills. The students held that the cultural tour made them increase knowledge and experiences, and interaction with the international students from different countries broadened their horizon and personal relationship.

UA is among the top 100 universities in the world. According to 2022 THE, it ranks 6th among the universities around the world and 68th according to QS rankings 2024. The program provides the opportunity for the students to broaden their international horizon and enhance their communication skills in English. IMU will continue to provide the academic platform for students’ all-around development and help them become excellent talents with international horizon and intercultural communication skills.
