From July 20 to 24, 2021, the School of Physical Science and Technology of IMU and Inner Mongolia Physical Society hosted the 13th International Conference on Computational Nanoscience and New Energy Materials in Hohhot City. The conference was live-streamed and replayed on the academic platform of Kouxiang. On the morning of July 21, 2021, the conference opened. Prof. Gong Jian, secretary of Inner Mongolia Society and vice president of Inner Mongolia Normal University, presided over the opening ceremony where Gao Guanglai, vice president of IMU, extended his welcome to the conference attendees and Prof. Wang Guanghou with Nanjing University who is academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered an opening address.

More than 550 leading scholars in the field of the computational materials science from 135 colleges and institutions attended the conference and had discussions and exchanges on significant problems in such frontier research fields as semi-conductor, spintronics, energy, topological insulator and catalysis. At the conference altogether given were 3 keynote lectures, 17 keynote academic reports, 115 invited lectures, 12 oral lectures and 27 reports of the students. And the attendees were shown the latest developments and future development trend of the computational materials science in such aspects as computational methods, development and application of programs, big data and artificial intelligence, material design, physical and chemical mechanism analysis, new theories, new concept and new paradigms. And the young scientists were provided with a grand banquet of knowledge. During the conference 129 wall newspapers of students were displayed, 6 awards for excellent reports of students and 20 awards for excellent placards of students were voted on. The conference lasted for 3 days and there were 540,000 views of the conference on the livestreaming platform of Kouxiang.

With the development of computer and intelligent algorithm, “new materials design”, “high throughput computing” and “ machine learning” have become the key words in such fields as physics, chemistry and materials. With the strong support of the CPC and the government, more and more new forces in China are getting involved in the computational materials science, which is manifested by the large number of people and supercomputing enterprises that were present at the conference. Xi Jinping, secretary of the Central Committee of the CPC, expressed his great concern over the first principles computing of super computers at the conference for academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, which fully shows the significant role played by the computational materials science in new materials industry in a new round of scientific and technological revolution. The success of the conference is bound to bring about the new momentum for the further development of new materials science, which will in turn push the leapfrog development of computational nanoscience and new energy materials.
