To strengthen the exchange among the colleges(departments) of computer science of the universities in the western regions of China and boost the common development of the discipline of computer science of the universities in western regions of China, the 5th Forum of Deans of Colleges of Computer Science of Universities in Western China & the Symposium on Building of Major Courses and Development of Engineering Capability of Major of Computer Science which was hosted by the Organizing Committee of the forum and organized by IMU, took place in Hohhot City. Over 80 deans(or chairpersons) of the colleges(departments) of computer science of over 40 universities in western China and other experts attended the forum.

Prof. Zhou Jiantao, director of the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs of IMU and dean of the College of Computer Science of IMU, chaired the opening ceremony. Liu Yongbin, vice president of IMU, and Prof. Shang Xuequn, dean of the School of Computer Science(SCS) of Northwestern Polytechnical University(NPU), addressed the forum respectively on behalf of IMU and the organizing committee of the forum.

During the part of specially-invited speeches, Prof. Zhou Aoying, vice president of East China Normal University, delivered the speech concerning the reflections on the major of computer science in a digital era, in which he pointed out the importance of data in the economic and social development and stressed the core position of the data-related majors in the field of computer education. Prof. Zhou Xingshe with SCS, delivered the speech about the development of generative AI and its influence on computer education, in which he summarized the surprising development of generative AI and pointed out the positive influence of generative AI on learning and teaching. Prof. Shi Zhenwei, chairman of the Department of Aerospace Information Engineering of the School of Astronautics of Beihang University and winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, delivered the speech regarding the research on the intelligent processing of aerospace remote sensing information and talent cultivation, in which he discussed the ideas and approaches for the scientific research in the field of remote sensing in an intelligent era and summarized the effective experience about the cultivation of high-level top-notch talents.

During the part of discussion of special topics, the in-depth discussions were conducted among Zhao Junfeng, deputy dean of the College of Computer Science of IMU, Shang Xuequn, dean of SCS, Cui Jiangtao, executive dean of the School of Computer Science and Technology of Xidian University, Tang Yazhe, deputy dean of the School of Computer Science and Technology of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Zhong Jiang, deputy dean of the College of Computer Science of Chongqing University, Ma Zhixin, deputy dean of the School of Information Science and Engineering of Lanzhou University, Prof. Fu Xueliang, dean of the College of Computer and Information Engineering of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University. Their discussions were about the course building of major of computer science and cultivation of engineering capability.

The keynote speeches were chaired by Sun Tao, deputy dean of the College of Computer Science of IMU. Xiao Guoqiang, dean of the School of Computer and Information Engineering of Southwest University, Zhang Hongming, dean of the College of Information Engineering of Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, Li Zhigang, dean of the College of Information Science and Technology of Shihezi University, Qian Wenhua, deputy dean of the School of Information Science and Engineering of Yunnan University and Huang Baoqi, deputy dean of the College of Compute Science, delivered keynote speeches , combining the characteristics of their universities and development of the discipline of computer science.

The Forum of Deans of Colleges of Computer Science of Universities in Western China is an academic forum which has been launched by the schools of computer science and schools of information of the following university: Northwest Polytechnical University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xidian University, Lanzhou University, Chongqing University, Sichuan University and University of Science and Technology of China. It takes place every year and mainly discusses the building of the discipline of computer science and talent cultivation in this discipline. It has attracted deans from the schools of computer science of nearly 100 universities.
