The School of Mongolian Studies of Inner Mongolia University(IMU) is an institution which intends to cultivate the advanced professional talents for Mongolian Studies and related disciplines and conducts the scientific research in Mongolian Studies.

In 1957, the Department of Mongolian Language and Literature was established to foster the professional talents that the country and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR) needed. In 1962, the Mongolian Language Research Office was established as a scientific research institution that specialized in the study of Mongolian language. In 1982, the Mongolian Language Research Office evolved into the Institute of Mongolian Language which was directly affiliated to the university. On December 12, 1995, the Department of Mongolian Language and Literature, Institute of Mongolian Language, Institute of Mongolian History, Institute of Inner Mongolian Modern and Contemporary History and Institute of Neighboring Countries merged to establish the Academy of Mongolian Studies to promote the development of the disciplines in Mongolian Studies. In 2000, the Academy of Mongolian Studies was renamed as the School of Mongolian Studies and managed as a school. In 2010, the Department of Mongolian History, a relatively independent teaching and research institution, was established based on the Institute of Mongolian History and Institute of Inner Mongolian Modern and Contemporary History.

In 1962, the master’s degree program of Mongolian Language and Literature began to enroll students in IMAR. In 1975, IMU enrolled the first batch of 36 undergraduate students of journalism who were selected among workers, farmers and soldiers and taught in Mongolian. In 1986, the undergraduate major of Journalism was offered and began to enroll students in 1988 and in 1999 the Department of Journalism and Publishing was founded and the major of Journalism and that of Publishing were newly added. In 1981, the master’s degree program of Chinese Ethnic Minority Languages and Literature began to be offered. In 1984, the doctor’s degree program of Chinese Language and Literature was offered. In 2011, the doctor’s degree program of Chinese Language and Literature got approved. In 2003, the Department of Journalism was authorized to offer the master’s degree program of the sub-discipline of Journalism and in 2010 the master’s degree program of the discipline of Journalism and Communication. In 2002, the post-doctoral program of Chinese Ethnic Minority Languages and Literature was offered. In 2003, the undergraduate major of Broadcasting and Anchoring was added.

For over 60 years, the school has devoted to the development of the higher education of ethnic minorities and established a complete teaching system of the higher education of ethnic minorities encompassing the programs for undergraduate students, master students and doctor students and post-doctoral programs to cultivate a large number of outstanding talents for the country and make great achievements in the discipline construction.

Since the establishment of IMU, the disciplines in Mongolian Studies have graduated over 4700 undergraduate students, more than 1500 master students and over 340 doctor students and cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for different sectors at home and abroad. The Communist Party of China Committee of the School of Mongolian Studies has 13 sub-CPC committees which have 314 members, of which 89 are teachers and 225 students.

During the 12th-Five-Year-Plan period, the school has established such academic research platforms as the Research Center for Applied Linguistics, Research Center for Documents of Mongolian History, Research Center for History and Geography of Mongolia Plateau, Research Center for Mongolian-Tibetan Culture and Research Center for Jangar. Besides, the school has set up such laboratories and supporting facilities as the Joint Laboratory of Machine Translation, Laboratory of Social Linguistics, Experiment Center for Mongolian Journalism and Communication and Museum of Mongolian Literature.

The discipline of Mongolian Language and Literature became a national-level key discipline in 1988. In 1995, it became a key discipline under “211 Project” and the national base for talent cultivation and scientific research of the basic disciplines of liberal arts. In 2008, the major of Mongolian Language and Literature was rated as the national-level major with distinctive characteristics and the major of Journalism as regional-level brand major. In 2009 the major of Mongolian Language and Literature became a national pilot program for innovation in talent cultivation model. With the efforts of generations of its faculty, the School of Mongolian Studies has become a base for talent cultivation and academic research which has its own unique characteristics and advantages.

The School of Mongolian Studies is an institution of talent cultivation and academic research which was established on the basis of the discipline of Mongolian Studies-a unique and strong discipline of IMU.
