The symposium on the one-year anniversary of the founding of the Northeast Asia Language Resources Center of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the appointment ceremony of the Academic Board was held at IMU in the morning of August 18, 2020. Prof. Erhenbayar, vice president of IMU, attended the ceremony and made a speech. More than 30 experts from the Academy of Social Sciences of Inner Mongolia, Inner Mongolia Normal University, Hohhot Minzu College, Inner Mongolia Radio and Television Station, the Ethnic Publishing House of Inner Mongolia, Qinghai University and other sister universities and scientific research institutes attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Dahurbayar, director of the Section of Social Sciences of IMU.
The ceremony
Founded on August 18, 2019, the Northeast Asian Language Resources Center of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is a scientific research institute under the direct leadership of IMU. Prof. Nasen Urtuu from IMU is the director of the center. The Academic Board of the center was established and 15 experts from relevant universities and scientific research institutes both in China and from abroad were invited as members of the Academic Board. Prof. Li Yuming, former director of the Language and Text Information Management of the Ministry of Education, former secretary of the CPC Party Committee and director of the Beijing Advanced Information Center for Language Resources of Beijing Language and Culture University was invited as the director of the Academic Board. The Academic Board is responsible for the academic planning, drafting of research and development plans, supervision of the implementation of projects and arrangement of major academic activities of the Center. At the moment the Center is undertaking the special project of Building Digital Platform for the Northeast Asian Language Resources granted by the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Prof. Nasen Urtuu, director of the Center, gave a report on the progress of the project of Digital Platform for the Northeast Asian Language Resources and demonstrated the embryos of the Digital Museum and Machine Translation at the ceremony. Prof. Li Yuming, director of the Academic Board, gave an academic report entitled The Functional Perspective of Language Resources. In his report, Prof. Li emphasized that language was a resource with the protective function of preserving the old days of mankind, informative function of forging a new world for the humanity and the functions of cultural continuity, communications and creations. Many of the information-related industries are language-based. Language data will turn out to be a major productive element, and language will be incorporated into essential productive forces in the near future. It is expected that the Northeast Asian Language Resources Center be built under the awareness of the three major functions of language resources; language resources be developed under the perspective of “data being deemed as a productive element”; the digitalization and intelligentization of language resources be promoted to stand as an example for China’s intelligent new infrastructure and digital economy.
Prof. Erhenbayar, vice president of IMU, presented letters of appointment to the members of the Academic Board of the Center and delivered a concluding speech in which he extended congratulations to the successful convening of the one-year anniversary of the founding of the Center and the appointment ceremony of the Academic Board, fully affirmed the work done and achievements made in the building of the Digital Platform for the Northeast Asian Language Resources, and expressed his wishes that the Northeast Asian Language Resources Center make progress in the research and development under the project in a steady manner and accomplish the tasks of research and development with satisfactory quality and quantity under the guidance of the Academic Board and in accordance with the schedule and requirement of the project.

A meeting of the Academic Board was held after the ceremony at which Prof. Bayinbaatar made a report on the progress in the bid-inviting purchase in the Digital Platform for the Northeast Asian Language Resources, Prof. Gardi presented the latest progress in the building of Mongolian language literature, and Dr. Hong Ying reported on the translation of the collected works of Francis Cleaves and relevant questions. In conclusion, the board members discussed plans for their future work.
