The new native grass variety "IMU No. 2 Bromus inermis Leyss." cultivated by our university has passed the national grass variety examination and approval

Bromus inermis Leyss., is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Bromus L. of the family Gramineae (Poaceae). Due to its strong ecological adaptability, high forage yield, good palatability, and high nutritional value, it is one of the ideal grass species for ecological restoration of degraded grasslands, improvement of grazing grasslands, and establishment of high-quality, high-yield artificial pastures in China. However, the few varieties of Bromus inermis Leyss that have been developed and the poor seed supply capacity are key issues currently constraining the production and application of Bromus inermis Leyss.

In response to these challenges, Prof. Ren Weibo's team from our university, in collaboration with the Inner Mongolia Grass Industry Technology Innovation Center Co., Ltd., the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Forestry and Grassland Seedling Station, and other relevant units, undertook joint research efforts. Through years of systematic selection and breeding, they successfully cultivated an excellent new variety, "IMU No.2 Bromus inermis Leyss.", which boasts high grass yield, high nutritional value, and strong ecological adaptability. This variety was officially approved by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration in September 2024. Compared with control varieties, the grass yield of this new variety increased by more than 15%. It is suitable for ecological restoration of degraded and sandy grasslands, improvement of natural grasslands, and construction of artificial pastures in regions of Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Shanxi, and neighboring provinces with similar climatic conditions.

The team will continue to focus on technical challenges related to efficient seed propagation and production of the new variety, aiming to enhance the seed production and supply capabilities of this variety. By promoting and applying the new variety, it aims to provide significant native grass species support for grassland ecological restoration and functional enhancement in our region.
