The 4th Symposium on “Translation-Oriented Terminology Studies” held successfully

From July 28 to 30, 2023, the 4th Symposium on “Translation-Oriented Terminology Studies” hosted by China National Committee for Terminology in Science and Technology(CNCTST), Inner Mongolia University, Hohhot Minzu College, Hulunbuir University, was held at Hulunbuir University. Present at the symposium were over 120 scholars from more than 50 universities, colleges and institutions concerned in and outside Inner Mongolia which include Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Beijing Normal University, Shangdong University, Yunnan University, Zhengzhou University and Inner Mongolia University. They conducted deep discussions centering on the theme of “translation-oriented terminology studies”.

Erhembayar, vice president of IMU, Pei Yajun, executive deputy director of China National Committee for Terminology in Science and Technology, Nalina, vice president of Hohhot Minzu College and Aotegen, vice president of Hulunbuir University were present at the opening ceremony of the symposium and addressed the ceremony. The opening ceremony was chaired by Dahurbayar, director of the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences of IMU.

Erhembayar briefly introduced the development of IMU in recent years in his address. He hoped that the experts and scholars continued to pay attention to and support the academic research of IMU. He conducted his brief discussion in terminology definition and standardization, terminology translation and studies of terminology modernization. Erhembayar put emphasis on the importance of terminology studies and expected that greater achievements would be made in terminology studies in China under the leadership of CNCTST.

Pei Yajun recalled the development of CNCTST since its establishment, what the organization had done and the prominent achievements it had made in recent 20 years. He gave his constructive opinions and suggestions on boosting the rapid and high-quality development of terminology studies in China. He thought that terminology is a piece of rich land and with conceited efforts the terminology studies would blossom in China and play a more and more important role in international terminology studies.

In combination with the further study by Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the spirit of what Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, instructed when he inspected Inner Mongolia, Nalina introduced the development and achievements of Hohhot Minzu College since it was established 70 years ago and expressed her thanks to the experts, scholars and those from other universities and colleges for their long-term care and support for the college. She pointed out that this symposium would further the research of translation-oriented terminology studies of Hohhot Minzu College, which would drive the advancement of other fields and all-around development of the college.

Aotegen introduced in his address the development of Hulunbuir City where the symposium was held, its advantages in its geographical and cultural environment and the development of Hulunbuir University. He expressed his thanks to the experts and scholars present at the symposium for their hard work. He thought that this symposium would lead the university into the field of translation-oriented terminology studies. He also pointed out the importance of translation-oriented terminology studies from the perspective of the cultural exchange and integration among different ethnic groups.

At the opening ceremony, Pei Yajun, executive deputy director of CNCTST, and Erhembayar, vice president of IMU, unveiled the nameplate of the Applied Research Center for Languages of Minority Ethnic Groups of China.

The first half of keynote speeches were chaired by Wang Qi, associate senior editor and director of the Division of Scientific Research of the Business Center of CNCTST. Prof. Feng Zhiwei with the Institute of Applied Linguistics of the Ministry of Education, Prof. Baater with Inner Mongolia Academy of Social Sciences, Prof. He Zhihong, president of Chinese Academy of Language Industry, Prof. Celimug with Xidian University and Prof. Cui Jinzhong , acting editor-in-chief of the journal of China Terminology affiliated to CNCTST, delivered their keynote speeches. The corresponding titles of their speeches are Big Language Model and Translation, the Categories of Explaining and Defining Terms-Take the Names of Cows, Dogs, Sheep, Pigs and Chickens in Mongolian, the Status Quo of Language Translation Industry and Propagation of Terms of Language Industry, the Research of Terms Strengthens Semantic Communication: Realization of Efficient and Smart Communication, An Analysis of Translation-Oriented Studies at Home and Abroad.

The second half of keynote speeches were chaired by Subdao, director of the Division of Science and Technology of Hohhot Minzu College. Prof. Li Yan, president of Chinese Academy of Language Industry, Wang Qi, associate senior editor and director of the Division of Scientific Research of the Business Center of CNCTST, Associate Prof. Liu Zhifu with China Three Gorges University, Prof. Zhao Ronghui with Shanghai International Studies University, Prof. Subdao, director of the Division of Science and Technology of Hohhot Minzu College, Prof. Dahurbayar, director of the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences of IMU, delivered their keynote speeches. The titles of their corresponding speeches are Research on the Path for the Development and Application Models of International Terminological Resources, Status Quo of Use of International Terminological Resources and Reflections Concerned, A Survey of Foreign Words and Use of Their Recommended Chinese Translated Equivalents , Transcription of Foreign Names into Chinese: Status Quo and Outlook, Research on the Multi-Language Translation from the Perspective of Forging the Sense of the Community of Chinese Nation-Take Hohhot Minzu College as an Example and Corpus-Based Research on Modern Mongolian Noun Terms.

Symposium

Besides the keynote speeches, 5 parallel sessions were set up at the symposium. At the sessions, the experts and scholars conducted discussions about term standardization and propagation, term translation and theories, terminological science and technology and its application, compilation of term dictionary and research, construction and research of multi-language term database and Chinese modernization and term translation.

Session

The closing ceremony of the symposium was chaired by Prof. Bai Xiufeng, dean of the School of Mongolian Studies of Hulunbuir University. According to the reports from the chairpersons of sessions, Dai Xiaoming, senior editor and deputy director of the Business Center of CNCTST, gave a summary for the symposium. He summarized the scholars’ unique and innovative ideas and pointed out the problems and difficulties that needed to be solved in the terminological research in China. He said that the topics and achievements of the symposium fully showed that there would be a bright future for terminology research. And he hoped that more and more experts and scholars from translation circle, linguistic circle, educational circle and publishing circle would join in the terminological research.

With two-day discussions, the experts and scholars have had a systematic command of how terminology work and terminology research in a new era develop in a high-quality way and better integrate into and serve Chinese modernization and make more contributions to the healthy development of languages, maintenance of national unity, inheritance of Chinese culture and advancement of social progress. At the beginning of fully implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, this symposium is meant to study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and discuss and plan the development of terminology research in a new era, which will hugely boost the academic reflections and achievements in the field.
