Registration of 3 new potato varieties bred by IMU gets approved

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of P.R.C has issued the notice(No. 711) to approve of the registration of 931varieties of 25 crops including  3 new potato varieties bred by IMU Research Center for Potato Engineering Technologies: IMU No. 1(Registration No. GDP Potato2023150055), IMU No. 2(Registration No. GDP Potato2023150056), IMU No. 3(Registration No. GDP Potato2023150057).

Potato industry is one of the leading industries in the industrialization of agriculture and animal husbandry in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the important pillar for the targeted poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. However, the annual undersupply of raw-material potatoes caused by the extreme lack of specialized potato varieties for processing has been a bottleneck problem that has restrained the development of potato industry in Inner Mongolia or even the whole country. On account of the urgent need of the specialized varieties for  processing in potato industry, the research team of the center has, through 10-year cross-breeding, selected and bred 3 new early-ripe potato varieties for processing.

IMU No. 1 has been hybridized and bred with “Russet Burbank” as female parent and “Huinkul Mag” as male parent. As the variety for processing fried chips, it is suitable to be planted in spring in the one-season planting areas in the north of China like Ordos, Xilin Gol and Hohhot in Inner Mongolia and Weichang in Heibei province. Its growing stage lasts 75 days. It is early-ripe and has oval-shaped tuber which has yellow skin, white-flesh, 20.4% dry matter and 17.9% of starch. Its fried chips have a high quality. The variety has strong potato scent, long storage period and strong disease resistance and stress resistance.

IMU No. 2 has been hybridized and bred with “Quarta” as female parent and “Ariane” as male parent. As the variety for processing fried pieces or chips, it is suitable to be planted in spring in the one-season planting areas in the north of China like Ordos, Xilin Gol and Hohhot in Inner Mongolia and Weichang in Heibei province. Its growing stage lasts 86 days. It has oval-shaped tuber which has yellow skin and flesh, 21.3% dry matter and 11.9% of starch. Its fried chips have a high quality. IMU No. 3 has been hybridized and bred with “B 75.65” as female parent and “Vital” as male parent. As the variety for processing fried piecesor chips, it is suitable to be planted in spring in the one-season planting areas in the north of China like Ordos, Xilin Gol and Hohhot in Inner Mongolia and Weichang in Heibei province. Its growing stage lasts 88 days. It has oval-shaped tuber which has yellow skin and medium yellow flesh, 19.4% dry matter and 12.6% of starch. Its fried chips have a high quality. It has strong flavor, low temperature resistance and saccharification resistance.

The key demonstration zones for the new varieties have been established in Dalat Banner, Ordos City, Hohhot City and Taipusi Banner, Xilin Gol League in Inner Mongolia. The total area for demonstration in 3 consecutive years reached more than 1,000 mu(about 0.667km²) and the yield per mu was over 3 tons, which shows a promising market prospect. The experts on potatos in Inner Mongolia predicted yield of 3 varieties in the field 65 after the seedlings came out above the ground. As a result, IMU No. 1 had a predicted yield of 2308.8 kg, IMU No.2 3135.9 kg and IMU No. 3 2296.4 kg. Compared with “Maiken No.1” in the middle and late ripening periods, 3 new varieties respectively had an increase of 18.3%, 60.7% and 17.7% per mu, which was unanimously acknowledged by the experts.
