On November 22, 2023, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) released the list of its newly selected academicians in 2023. Zhao Gang, alumnus of IMU, has been selected as academician of the Division of Mathematics and Physics of CAS.
Zhao Gang is a research fellow with the National Astronomical Observatories, CAS and a PhD student supervisor. From September, 1983 to July, 1986, he was a master student of theoretical physics of Physics Department of IMU. He is now the director of the Science Committee of Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopy Telescope(LAMOST)-a national key scientific and technological infrastructure and member of the work group of the global coordinative and executive committee of the large scientific facilities on the ground and in space of International Astronomical Union.
Zhao is the leading researcher in the studies of Galactic System in China and has made systematic and original research achievements in such significant aspects as the search of the first-generation supermassive stars and ultra-metal-poor stars in space, reproduction of the history of the integration and formation of Galactic System and revelation of the origin and evolvement of lithium. He has published over 400 SCI articles, which have been cited about 10,000 times. In 2008, Zhao won as the first author the 2nd prize of the National Natural Science Awards. His work to simulate the X radiation source of the supra-arcade of solar flare and reconnection jet was selected as one of top 10 scientific advancements in 2011 in China and its systematic research results of the large sample have become the classic work and included in the textbooks and monographs.
