College of Ecology and Environment

Founded in November 2008, College of Environment and Resources is an applied, researching and open institute constructed through the collaboration of Inner Mongolia University and Environmental Protection Bureau of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. On the September 8th, 2009, during the meeting in Hohhot of Advisory Committee on Environmental Science and Engineering Education under the Ministry of Education, a grand opening ceremony was held. The predecessor of College of Environment and Resources is Department of Environment of School of Life Sciences. Advocated by Dr. Li Bo, a famous ecologist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the major of environment was established in 1992 and the first undergraduates were enrolled in 1994. In 1998, Master Program in Environmental Science(Level-2) was authorized. In 2005, Master Degree Program in Environmental Engineering was authorized. In 2009, Undergraduate Program in Environmental Engineering was approved. In 2011, Master Degree Program in Environmental Science and Engineering(Level-1) was authorized. In the same year, Undergraduate Major in Environmental Science was rated as one of Brand Majors of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Since the foundation of College of Environment and Resources, the discipline of Environment and Engineering has been listed as one of the key disciplines of Inner Mongolia University for the third phase of “Project 211” and “Project of Enhancing Comprehensive Strength of Universities and Colleges in the Central and Western Regions”. With the concept of “protecting environment and preserving resources”, a distinctive collection of disciplines has been established in the triunity of science, resources, and engineering with controlling environmental pollution and recycling waste as its core.

Faculty

    Currently, there are 43 faculty members, including 6 professors, 16 associate professors, and 1 senior experimentalist. Among them, there are 4 doctoral supervisors, 22 master supervisors, and 11 part-time master supervisors, among whom 90% of teachers are from key universities or high-level research institutes at home and abroad, and 40% of them have the experience of pursuing further study or overseas study over 1 year. 5 teachers were selected as members of “Grassland Elites” Project, 2 are selected as first batch of candidates of “321 Talents Project”, 4 are selected as second batch of candidates of “321 Talents Project”, and 2 are selected as “ Leading Talents of Inner Mongolia in Science and Technology ”. Now, a team of faculty members with rational educational background and international academic vision has formed with the ability to perform scientific frontier research and national key projects.

Talents Cultivating

With the educational principle of “taking root in the frontier, serving Inner Mongolia and facing the country” and the cultivating characteristic of “strengthening basic knowledge, broadening fields, emphasizing practice, reinforcing characteristics and classifying disciplines”, the college brings into full play the national and local characteristics of Inner Mongolia University, based on solid foundation of the disciplines, the distinct discipline direction and the excellent teaching staff to cultivate talents for Inner Mongolia and China.  

In practice teaching, the college has founded the Environmental Laboratory Center consisting of Environmental Monitoring and Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, Environmental Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Comprehensive Laboratory, Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Environmental Simulation Laboratory and Environmental Information System(EIS) Laboratory. Besides, the college has jointly set up the practice centers with 9 institutions and companies, including Environmental Protection Bureau of Jiuyuan District, Baotou, Environmental Monitoring Station, Ordos, Environmental Protection Bureau of Dongsheng District, Ordos, Environmental Monitoring Center, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Environmental Monitoring Station, Hohhot, and Shouchuang Chunhua Water Service Group. At present, College of Environment and Engineering has signed the joint training program(2-year education in China plus another 2-year education abroad) for undergraduates with University of Portland, USA.  

Up to 2015, more than 640 students with Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science in 17 periods have graduated and 112 students with Bachelor Degree in Environmental Engineering in 2 periods have graduated. In addition, 288 postgraduate students in Environmental Science and Engineering were enrolled and cultivated and nearly 80 postgraduate students in Environmental Engineering graduated.

 

Research Platform

College of Environment and Resources has established Institute of Environmental Geology Research of Inner Mongolia University, the Research Center of Environmental and Resources Engineering and Technology, Environment Test Center, Environmental Assessment and Planning Technology Center and Laboratory of Efficient Utilization of Water Resources in Arid Areas. In 2003, the Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Control and Waste Utilization of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Engineering & Technology Center of Wastewater Treatment and Reuse in Coal Chemical Industry of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region were approved to establish. In addition, research laboratories under Cultivating Center of State Key Laboratory for Grassland Ecology constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, including Environmental Monitoring Research Laboratory, Aquatic Environment Research Laboratory, and Microbial Ecology Research Laboratory have been established. At present, the scientific research instruments and equipment are worth over 30 million.

 

Research

95 projects have been approved in last five years, including 1 National Science and Technology Support Project, 1 Sub-Project of Chinese National Programs for Fundamental Research and Development (973 Program) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 special project of Basic Scientific and Technological Work of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 25 projects supported by National Natural Science Fund, 1 project of International Cooperation, 1 special project of Public Welfare Industry of the Ministry of Water Resources, 2 projects supported by West Light Foundation of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 projects of the Leading Talents in Science and Technology of Inner Mongolia, 1 transformation project of Agricultural Technology of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 6 applied development projects, 29 projects supported by Natural Science Fund of Inner Mongolia, 16 provincial or ministerial level projects and 10 horizontal scientific research projects. The college has made breakthroughs in the major national projects of science and technology. It’s the first time that the single project approved amounts to more than 10 million. The newly-approved funding adds up to RMB 30.59 million Yuan.

    About 194 papers were published, among which more than 40 were indexed by SCI. Four monographs and translated works were published and two national inventions were patented. Besides, a demonstration area for restoring and reconstructing the ecological system in Wuliangsuhai wetland with a total area of 300 mu, Wusitai industrial demonstration project of purifying water from the Yellow River and a laboratory of efficient water utilization in arid areas have been established. The field positioning observation stations along the Yellow River were primarily set up.

    There are five research fields, such as Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Geochemistry, Environmental Ecology and Water Resources in Arid Areas, Pollution Control Engineering, and Environmental Planning & Management. The studies mainly focus on the following fields, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Biological Techniques, Element Geochemistry, Pollution Ecology, Ecological Planning & Environmental Assessment, Wetland Environment Evolution and Pollution Control of Coal-based Fuels with advantages and characteristics. Two research laboratories, Environmental Geochemistry and Environmental Microbiology & Waste Reuse, were set up after the college was established, and the corresponding research groups were selected into Innovative Groups in Science and Technology of Inner Mongolia University.

Prospective

In accordance with the goal of constructing high-level university, College of Environment and Resources has harbored the thought of providing services for the development of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, based on local needs. With the principle of “protecting environment and preserving resources”, College of Environment and Resources will compact the disciplines, reinforce the construction of innovative teams, enhance innovation of scientific researches to form the unique college culture. At the same time, College of Environment and Resources will strengthen cooperation, conduct applied researches, and reinforce social services to promote education. The college has planned its the medium-term and long-term development with the orientation of constructing a domestically leading college featuring application, openness and research. Besides, the college aims at making itself a center of high-level talents in environment protection and sustainable utilization of resources, a service center for scientific research and technology and a consultative center of management and policy-making to provide theoretic and technical supports for the sustainable development of economy, society, environment, and resources in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and China.
