The College of Literature and Journalism of Inner Mongolia University was originally under the name of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature established in 1957, which was one of the earliest departments of IMU with profound academic tradition and rich humanistic deposits. In 2008, on the basis of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and the Department of Journalism, the College of Literature and Journalism was founded, which indicated great achievements in discipline construction, remarkable progress in all aspects and injected vigor and vitality to the development of the college.

The college consists of the Department of Chinese Literature and the Department of Journalism. The Department of Chinese Literature was set up in 1957, including 2 undergraduate majors, namely Modern Chinese Literature and Chinese International Education. Sticking to the principle of “emphasizing the fundamentals and focusing on special features”, generations of faculty members of the college have achieved through their unremitting efforts remarkable accomplishments in phonology, study of Chinese characters, cultural linguistics, dialects, Redology, study of Tao Yuanming, study of novels of Ming and Qing dynasties, study of literature of Inner Mongolia, study of Wang Zhaojun culture, receptional aesthetics and literary works in Chinese by Mongolian writers. In 2006, the department was awarded the title of Brand Name Major at provincial level. The majors of Chinese Philology and Theory of Literature and Art are labeled as Key Majors at provincial level. The major of Journalism was started in 1987, which evolved into the Department of Journalism in 2002, and consists of 3 undergraduate majors, namely Journalism, Editing & Publishing (digital direction) and Broadcasting and Hosting Art. In 2008, the major of Journalism was designated as Brand Name Major at provincial level. By focusing on the latest development of China and Inner Mongolia, prioritizing disciplinary features, offering service to the cause of news communication and contributing to the economic and social development of Inner Mongolia, the academic research of Journalism has been rewarded with considerable achievements in the study of new media and the development of media in Inner Mongolia and yielded positive influences both in the academia and in the journalism community.

Presently the college is authorized for offering doctoral and master’s programs in Chinese Language and Literature at the level of primary discipline, master’s program in Journalism Communication at the level of primary discipline, program of Master of Journalism and Communication (MJC), and 5 undergraduate majors in Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese International Education, Journalism, Editing & Publishing (Digital Publishing), Broadcasting and Hosting Art. A mutually supplementary system coordinating traditional fundamental disciplines with modern applied disciplines has been set up. At present there are 217 doctoral and graduate students and 707 undergraduates studying at the college.

The college boasts a highly qualified teaching contingent of 58 faculty members of which 53 are full time teachers, including 8 professors, 14 associate professors and 31 lecturers. 39 of them hold doctoral degrees, accounting for 74% of the total. Among the faculty members there are 1 Grassland Talent, 1 candidate for Grassland Talent, 1 Renowned Teacher in Inner Mongolia, 1 Promising Young Talent, 1 receiver of May 1st Labor Medal. The teaching team of Chinese Ancient Literature and the teaching team of College Chinese have been designated as Teaching Team of IMU. 2 Ph D tutors and 24 Master’s Tutors are working at the college. The faculty members are from Peking University, Renmin University of China, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing Normal University, Fudan University, Minzu University of China, Communication University of China, Zhejiang University, Shandong University, Nankai University, Shaanxi Normal University, Xiamen University, Suzhou University, Nanjing University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Sichuan University, Heilongjiang University, Capital Normal University, Northwest Normal University, Ningxia University, Inner Mongolia University, Moscow University and other well-known universities and research institutes.

The teaching team of Chinese Ancient Literature and the teaching team of College Chinese are university-level teaching teams. Young teachers of the college came out top time and again in the Young Teachers’ Teaching Skills Contest held by IMU. One of them won first prize in Young Teachers’ Teaching Skills Contest of Inner Mongolia in 2014 and second prize in the National Contest representing Inner Mongolia.

In the course of curriculum construction and curriculum reform, the college has been actively practicing and revising the syllabus, updating the teaching contents, and integrating the latest trend of disciplinary development, advanced information of theoretical research, and new phenomena and new ideas in the circle into the teaching contents. 4 high-quality courses at provincial level have been created, namely Chinese Ancient Literature by Prof. Gao Jianxin, An Introduction to Linguistics by Prof. Li Shuxin, Foreign Literature by Prof. Wang Fang, and News Interviews and Writing by Prof. Liu Hane. Introduction to Journalism by Prof. Gao Wei is designated as High-Quality Course of IMU. Three courses are listed as university-level courses for reform of teaching mode, namely News Interview and Writing directed by Prof. Liu Hane, Language and Communication directed by Associate Prof. Xu Jin, and History of Ancient Chinese Literature (IV) directed by Prof. Zhao Yanhua. In addition, to adapt to the trend of resources sharing in the information age, the college has produced three university-level video public courses, namely Language & Literature and Humanities Spirit by Prof. Li Shuxin, Journalists of the Era of the Republic of China by Prof. Zhang Liping and Ci (traditional Chinese rhymed verse) of the Ming and Qing Dynasties by Female Poets by Prof. Mi Yanqing. A high-quality resource-sharing course—Ancient Chinese Literature by Prof. Gao Jianxin and Prof. Wei Yonggui is in the process of recording. In terms of bilingual teaching, the course of Practice of Network Communication by Associate Prof. Ma Qiang has been granted with funds from IMU and is in the process of preparation. The project of Reform and Innovation of the Practical Teaching Mode of the Major of Journalism & Communication in the Age of Media Fusion directed by Prof. Liu Hane was awarded second prize of the Teaching Achievement Prizes of Inner Mongolia. The project of Construction of Practical Teaching Content and System of the Major of Journalism directed by Prof. Gao Wei and the project of Research and Practice of the Course Construction and Reform of College Chinese directed by Prof. Wei Yonggui were awarded second prize of Teaching Achievement Prizes of IMU.

In terms of teaching conditions and the internship practice base, there’s a huge collection of nearly 30 thousand volumes of books in the college reference room, which can meet the demands in the teaching, scientific researches and students' learning of all levels. The college is vigorously establishing an experimental teaching platform and practice base, and it has built up a provincial experimental demonstration teaching center, namely the Experimental Teaching Center for Journalism & Communication which consists of several specialized laboratories, including a Digital News Photography Lab, a News Editing and Multimedia Lab, a Digital Publishing Lab, an Emergency and News Mobile Collecting & Editing Lab, an Omnimedia Lab, a Broadcasting and Hosting Lab, of which the Digital Publishing Lab and the News Mobile Collecting & Editing Lab are the only ones of their kind nationwide. There’s also a national-level Practice Base—the Literature Practice Education Base of Inner Mongolia TV Station, which gives a guarantee for cultivating students’ practicing and innovating capacities.

The college is constituted with 4 research institutes containing the Literature Research Center for China’s northern ethnic groups, the Research Center of Language and Culture, the Research Center for Dissemination & Acceptance of Literature and the Research Center for Information Dissemination and Social Development of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Based on the literature in minority area and the cause of dissemination of culture and journalism, the college has focused on the scientific research of language & literature and information dissemination in minority areas. Furthermore, it has entrenched the key research fields in the comparative study of the cultures between Mongolian and Chinese idiomatic phrases, the study of the language development status and policy in Inner Mongolia, the cataloging and studying of historical materials of literature of Inner Mongolia, the study of famous minority writers and classical works in ancient China, the study of the relationship between northern nomadic culture and ancient literature in China, the study of proverbs of various ethnic groups in China ,the cataloging and studying of the documentations of the syncretism of the Mongolian and the Hans in the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, the study of new media and ethnic culture inheritance, the study of online public opinion in ethnic regions, the image-molding and propaganda of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which has made a great number of influential academic achievements, showing the increasing capacity in scientific researches.

The college owns great competence in scientific researches. Since the college was set up in 2008, it has obtained authorized approvals in 1 major national project on social science fund, 24 ordinary national projects on social science fund, 9 projects on Humanities & Social Sciences from the Ministry of Education, 31 projects on social science programs from the government of the Autonomous Region, and more than 20 horizontal projects of all kinds from the Ministry of Education and Association of Social Sciences, with the total funds amounting to more than RMB6 million. In addition, teachers in the college have issued more than 300 papers in core journals, published 62 academic monographs (including translated and compiled works), and their scientific research achievements have won 1 first prize from the provincial government, 32 second prizes and 35 third prizes.

The College of Dissemination of Literature and Journalism spares no efforts to promote the quality-oriented education and to create a platform for cultural quality education for students, extracurricular scientific and technological innovation, entrepreneurship and employment, which has effectively accelerated the promotion in students' comprehensive capacity. There’re also rich and colorful campus cultural activities, academic activities and social practices with fruitful outcomes in the college. The majority of students consolidated their foundations in brave innovation, active practice and all-round development. In terms of cultivating students' ability of innovation, the college has actively mobilized and carefully organized effective incentives for the students to carry out innovative researches and entrepreneurship trainings, so as to improve their comprehensive quality and ability in job-hunting, which gained their favorable feedbacks by active participating in academic innovation. In recent years, the college has gained approvals of 22 national-level students' entrepreneurial innovation projects and 106 ones at university level.

A special event in the drama season, IMU Drama & Screen Force, sponsored by the college, has won the top 10 demonstrative projects of honoring Chinese traditional culture among the universities in China. A series of activities with cultural characteristics such as the large-scale poetry recitation Golden River by Night and Ancient Chinese Literature Style, are the boutiques of the campus cultural events. The journal of the college, Grassland Breeze, is based on the original works of the teachers and students demonstrating their proud feats. Apart from the above, the college has hosted IMU Students Creative Film & TV Festival, which assembled the students' original excellent video works to spread away in multiple ways and created a great influence.

Over the past three years, the undergraduates of the college have attained, in the Challenge Cup—University Extracurricular Academic, Scientific & Technological Contest, 2 third prizes at national level and 18 provincial-level awards, including 3 first prizes, 5 second prizes, 7 third prizes and 3 prizes for excellence. The students’ team has also won the second prize at national level and the first prize at provincial level in Humanities Knowledge Contest as well as 2 awards for advanced team in the activities of promoting three items (culture, science & technology and public health) in rural areas during the summer social practices. Besides, the undergraduates have won the first prize in the National Collegiate Speech Contest, the excellence award at national level and special award at provincial level in the College Students' Career Planning Competition, the excellence award at national level in the Qi Yue Festival College Students' Recital Contest. Many teams have even won awards in the Micro Film Contest in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. A number of students have claimed prizes in the National English Contest for University Students, and they’ve got a series of awards at provincial level in various university cultural activities. Some students worked as volunteers at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 2010 Shanghai World Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games, and have become the symbolic envoys in IMU’s exchanges with foreign countries.

The present initial employment rate of the undergraduates stays at more than 90%, which ranks high among colleges of liberal arts. The college has been appraised and elected as an advanced unit of Inner Mongolia University for the employment of graduates for successive years. Graduates from the college work in various fields and sectors, including teaching, scientific research, the Party organizations, government departments, military departments, the business community and public institutions inside and outside Inner Mongolia. Many of them have become experts, scholars, senior executives and government officials making significant contributions to the economic and cultural constructions for the nation and the autonomous region. Their solid professional foundation, extensive knowledge horizon, deep humane attainments, extraordinarily innovative spirits, practical ability, excellent capacity in communication and writing abilities win them unanimous praises from various social circles.

The college has created a college culture characterized by open-mindedness, advanced concepts, sound style of study, strong academic atmosphere, scientific and standardized management, elegant aesthetic taste, rich cultural life and creative vitality and constructed a warm and harmonious spiritual home the faculty members and students. The college has won a series of honorary titles including “the advanced Party branch of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region”, “the red flag Youth League of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region”, “the advanced unit of Inner Mongolia University for human resources management”, “the advanced unit of Inner Mongolia University for technological innovation”, “the advanced unit of Inner Mongolia University for the affairs of the Youth League and students”, “the advanced labor union of Inner Mongolia University” etc.
