College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Inner Mongolia University (CCCE), formerly the Department of Chemistry of Inner Mongolia University, was founded in 1957, one of the earliest established teaching units. At the beginning of its founding, part of excellent teachers in their prime of their life were draw from the Peking University, Jilin University, Nankai University and other universities forming the basic teacher faculty. In April 2000, the Department of Chemistry was expanded and was renamed as College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Inner Mongolia University (CCCM), which marked that chemistry and other related sciences have entered a new stage of creating an all-around new situation.

CCCM now comprises the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Chemical Engineering, Mongolian Medicine Chemical Research Institute, Engineering Research Center of Dairy Product Quality and Safety Control Technology of the Ministry of Education, Large Equipment Analysis and Testing Center and other institutions. The college has several primary disciplines: chemistry, materials science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, and four secondary disciplines: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and analytical chemistry. The materials science and engineering discipline has a secondary discipline: material physics and chemistry. The chemical engineering and technology discipline has a secondary discipline: applied chemistry. The discipline of chemistry has been listed as the key-built subject of “11th Five-Year” and “211 Project”, and the inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and applied chemistry have been selected as key disciplines of the Autonomous Region.

The college features 2 Autonomous Region Level Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers of Chemistry and Chemical Materials; 5 Autonomous Region Level key laboratories,  of chemistry and physics of rare earth materials, chemistry of coal, chemistry of Mongolian medicine, fine organic synthesis, Nanotechnology ; and 1 engineering research center of dairy products quality and safety control technology of Ministry of education; and two provincial teaching groups of inorganic chemistry course and chemical engineering experiment.

The college has post-doctoral research programs of chemistry, and is accredited to grant the Ph.D. and master degrees in primary disciplines of chemistry, in 7 secondary disciplines of inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and polymer chemistry, material physics and chemistry and applied chemistry.

Among its 80 faculty and staff members, there are 60 members of teaching and research, 10 teaching assistants of experimental series, 10 members of Party and government management and service workers, 23 professors, 31 associate professor (including 4 senior experimentalists), and 13 lecturers12 of them are doctoral supervisor and 26 are master supervisor. At present, CCCE has 678 undergraduates, 249 master-level graduate students, 32 PhD-level graduate students (including 3 Ph.D. candidates from Mongolia to study in the country) and 2 postdoctors. The college is devoted to strengthening the construction of teachers faculty, among them, in the past five years, 3 were selected as Excellent Talents in New Century by the Ministry of Education, 12 as candidates of the "321 Talents Project" at the second level, 10 as the” prairie excellence” of class two and class three,2 as young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contribution to the autonomous region, 2 chief experts were introduced by the "three kinds of talents introduction project" , 2 were awarded the provincial excellent teachers of Higher Education. Besides, the college has 2 provincial leading talents and innovation teams of science and technology, 2 industry innovation talents teams of "prairie elite project".

College of chemistry and chemical engineering is equipped with quality teaching and research conditions. Beneficial from"211 Project", and the "construction project of enhancing the comprehensive strength of Inner Mongolia University", the college’s comprehensive strength of teaching infrastructure and experimental condition has been significantly improved. At present, the college’s experimental building covers an area of nearly 10,800 square meters, provides 6,617 square meters of laboratory space to host six basic laboratories of inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering principle and material chemistry.

During “The 12th Five-Year” Period, the college bought 24 sets of teaching and research equipment with more than 1 million yuan for each and 47,736,600 yuan in total, 21 sets of research instruments in different prices ranging from 50 thousand to 1 million for each and 13,663,300 yuan in total, also purchased high resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X- ray powder diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectrometer and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer and other equipment, totally investing 110 million yuan for teaching and research instruments and equipment construction, which powerfully guarantees the improvement of teaching quality and scientific research.

The reference room of the college has a collection of 70 kinds of Chemistry Journals, 482 Chinese and foreign-language reference books and other books, 12 kinds of newspapers, and a complete collection of US Chemical Abstract (CA) (1907 ~ 2007) and Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), which is unique in the Autonomous Region. The total number of volumes has amounted to 295 thousand.

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, which is based on the advantages of resources in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, has gradually formed a research direction with regional characteristics in the aspects of clean utilization of coal, rare earth and natural gas resources and sustainable development of energy. At present, the research focuses on many fields, such as inorganic energy and environmental materials chemistry, materials chemistry of rare earth function, chemical engineering of inorganic energy materials, Organometallic Chemistry, Rare earth catalysis, photocatalysis, chemical engineering of comprehensive utilization of resources and green application, functional materials, nano materials, polymer materials, biological materials and bio Nanotechnology, Electroanalytical chemistry, pollution control chemistry and so on.

From 2011 to 2015, the college has received 149 research projects, including 57 national projects with a total funding of 26,166,600 yuan (55 projects were financed by the National Natural Science Fund with 25,666,600 yuan), 67 provincial projects with a total funding of 106,380,00 yuan (33 projects were financed by the Inner Mongolia Natural Science Fund with 3,950,000 yuan), and 25 other projects (transverse project, municipal projects, school projects and so on) with a total funding of 8,513,000 yuan. The college has published 607 papers (358 of which are included in SCI), 15 monographs, been authorized 84 patents and won 2 natural science awards of the Autonomous Region.
