School of Physical Science and Technology

The School of Physical Science and Technology was founded in 2008, and its predecessor was the Department of Physics founded in 1957. With the motto of “Great in Ambition, Steady in Learning, Broad in Thinking and Firm in Practicing”, and the training policy of “Strengthening the foundation, developing the application, connecting science and engineering, and facing the market”, the college lays a solid foundation for the students after their graduation in terms of engaging in basic scientific research, teaching profession and various applied high-tech works. Students from the college are characterized by strong basic knowledge, high quality and great potentials. The college has always adhered to strict, pragmatic, diligent and innovative teaching and learning style, and has cultivated a large pool of outstanding talents (including an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences). Graduates from the college have been all over at home and abroad, and many of them have worked their way to leading positions in scientific research institutes or enterprises. They have won good reputations and made great contributions to the economic construction and social development of China and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The school is authorized for offering doctoral and master's programs at the level of primary discipline for Physics, and a post-doctoral working station of at the level of primary discipline for Physics as well as conferring doctoral and master's degrees in Biological Physics, master's degree in Physical Electronics (Engineering), and master's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Theoretical Physics, Condensed State Physics and Biophysics are key disciplines in Inner Mongolia.

Now the school offers three undergraduate majors: Mathematical Physics of National Basic Scientific Research and Training Base for Teaching Talents (Physics), Applied Physics and Electronic Science & Technology, of which Physics is a national characteristic major and ranks among the first batch of key majors for construction in Inner Mongolia, and all the three majors are brand name majors in Inner Mongolia. At present there is one national experimental teaching demonstration center, one state-level teaching team, three courses respectively designated as state-level quality course, state-level quality public video course, and state-level quality course for resource sharing, five provincial quality courses, and three provincial-level teaching teams. The college has compiled two textbooks for undergraduates in common higher education under the state-level planning during the 12th Five Year Plan, and won a second prize of state-level teaching achievement in higher education.

The present teaching staff of 60 consists of 22 professors, 1 research fellow, 4 part-time or invited professors (including 2 academicians of CAS), 18 people with associate senior titles, and more than 75% of the teachers with doctoral or master's degrees. There are 13 doctoral supervisors and 40 master’s supervisors, 1 prize winner for Renowned Teachers in Higher Education at national level, 2 scholars entitled Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions at national level, 4 scholars enjoying special allowance of the State Council, 1 recipient of the title of Outstanding Technical Personnel at national level, 1 winner of the Awards of the Ho Leung Ho Lee, 4 scholars entitled Young and Middle-aged Experts with outstanding contributions at provincial level, 2 people selected for the first level of “the New Century 321 Talent Project” in Inner Mongolia and 6 people for the second level, 3 people selected for the first level of the higher educational “111 project” in Inner Mongolia and 4 people for the second level, 4 people selected for Grassland Talents in Inner Mongolia, 1 pacesetter for teaching virtue at national level, 1 pacesetter for science and technology at provincial level, 1 winner of the title of Young Talent in Science and Technology in Inner Mongolia, and 4 winners of the title of renowned teachers. A contingent of qualified teachers with reasonable age structure, rich teaching experience, extensive scientific research scope and high research level has been established.

At present there are 845 students at the school including 655 undergraduates, 154 graduate students, 31 doctoral candidates and 3 overseas students. The rate of postgraduate recommendation in mathematical and scientific base (physics) is 50%, and 5% in the other two majors. In recent years, many of the recommended students have been enrolled by domestic universities and research institutes including Peking University, Tsinghua University and the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and received high praise.

The college has always adhered to the principle of teaching and scientific research going hand in hand, and it has made outstanding achievements in the field of basic scientific research, interdisciplinary research and applied basic scientific research, etc. The major research directions of the college cover condensed matter theory, biological physics, bioinformatics, rare-earth functional materials physics, semiconductor photovoltaic material technology, computational physics, field theory and particle physics, nonlinear optics and so on. The college boasts 4 provincial level key laboratories (key laboratory for ion beam bio-engineering, photovoltaic technology, nanometer science and technology, and rare-earth chemistry and physics), and 1 state-level experimental teaching demonstration center (the physical experimental teaching demonstration center). Over the past five years, the college has undertaken and completed 135 research projects, including the national natural science foundation of China, regional science and technology projects and projects entrusted by enterprises and institutions, with the funds totaling approximately RMB27.025 million; There are 133 academic papers published in SCI journals, and some of the applied research projects have been rewarded with remarkable economic returns. At present, there are 62 scientific research projects in progress, including 31 State Natural Science Fund projects, 5 projects from the Ministry of Education, 1 major project of provincial Natural Science Fund in Inner Mongolia, 16 surface projects of Natural Science Fund in Inner Mongolia and 9 other projects, with the total fund amounting to over RMB162.25 million.
