The College of Liberal Arts & Journalism used to be the Department of Chinese Language and Literature. It is one of the founding departments when Inner Mongolia University(IMU) was set up in 1957. With fine academic tradition and rich accumulation in humanities, the college is where such influential scholars as Zhang Changqing, Xiao Leinan, Liang Donghan, Lu Ge, Wen Xiaoyu, Chen Shoupeng and Ding Zhengbin worked. In 2002, the Department of Journalism was added to the college. In 2008, by mering the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and the Department of Journalism, the College of Liberal Arts & Journalism was founded, which indicated the college had made new achievements in its discipline construction and injected vigor and vitality into its development.

The college boasts 74 full-time teachers, of which 15 are professors, 25 associate professors and 32 lecturers. With reasonable structures of their graduation universities and age, most of the faculty members have graduated from the prestigious universities and research institutions at home and abroad and 86% of them hold doctor’s degrees. Among the faculty members there are1 teacher with the title of National Leading Talent in Philosophy and Social Sciences with the Special Support Program for High-Level Talents, 1 member of the Advisory Committee on Chinese Teaching of the Ministry of Education(MOE), 1 teacher entitled Regional Well-Known Social Scientist, 2 with the title of Regional Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 3 Regional Innovation Teams with Grassland Talent Program, 6 teachers with the title of Grassland Talent, 1 Regional May Day Medal winner, 4 entitled Regional Young Science and Technology Talent, 4 winners  of National Baosteel Award for Excellent Teachers, 2 with the title of Regional Master Teacher, 3 entitled Rising Star Teacher, 1 Regional Teaching Innovation Team and 2 Regional Master-Teacher Teams for Ideological and Political Education in Courses.

The College of Liberal Arts & Journalism has formed a multi-layer and multi-category pattern for talent cultivation which encompasses education for undergraduate students, master students, doctor students, continuing education, dual major education and education for international students. It has become a base for talent cultivation, which takes lead in teaching and scientific research in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR). The college offers the doctor’s degree program of the discipline of Chinese Language and Literature, master’s degree programs of the disciplines of Journalism and Communication and Artistic Theory and the professional master’s degree program of Journalism and Communication. All the programs are strong.

The college attaches great importance to scientific research. Based on the studies of language and literature, journalism and communication and artistic theories in ethnic minority areas and centering on the research of “the integration and communication of ethnic language and culture in northern borderland of China”, the college has made a batch of academic achievements which have ethnic characteristics, Chinese feelings and international horizon. Since 2008, the college has 4 key projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China(NSSFC), 1 key project of philosophy and social sciences supported by MOE, 1 project for leading talents supported by NSSFC, 1 important project supported by NSSFC, 1 project for rarely studied discipline supported by NSSFC and over 50 other projects supported by NSSFC including ordinary projects, projects for youth, projects for western areas of China and later-stage-supported projects, more than 20 projects supported by the Program of Humanities and Social Sciences of MOE and other ministries of China and nearly 100 projects supported by the Program of Social Sciences of IMAR, IMAR Federation of Social Sciences, the Education Department of IMAR, enterprises and some other non-governmental agencies. Since 2008, the faculty members of the college have published over 300 articles in such top journals as Literary Review, Foreign Literature Review, Literary Heritage, Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art, Minority Languages of China, Studies of Ethnic Literature, Chinese Journal of International Communication, Modern Communication and Journalism Research and over 150 academic monographs including translated works, edited works and collated works of ancient books by such prestigious publishing houses as  Zhonghua Book Company, the Commercial Press and China Social Sciences Press. And they have won, for their research achievements, 4 first prizes and over 70 second and third prizes of IMAR Government Awards for Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences. The college has had approved such scientific research platforms as Inner Mongolia Research Base for Writers’ Creation, Inner Mongolia Research Center for Writers’ Creation about Community for the Chinese Nation and IMAR Research Base for Literature and Culture of Yuan Dynasty, which forms a locally-characterized research powerhouse.

The College of Liberal Arts & Journalism has 6 undergraduate majors including Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese International Education, Journalism, Editing and Publishing Science, Network and New Media and Broadcasting and Anchoring, which form the major system in which basic disciplines and applied disciplines complement each other. The reference room of the college has a collection of over 30,000 books which can meet the needs of teaching, scientific research and study of students at different levels.

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature has 2 undergraduate majors: Chinese Language and Literature and Chinese International Education. The major of Chinese Language and Literature began to be offered in 1957 and was supported by some Chinese prestigious universities like Peking University and Nankai University. The major had a high-level starting point and has cultivated a lot of versatile talents for the country whose jobs are related to Chinese language and literature. In 1986, the master’s degree program of Chinese Language and Literature was offered. In 2006, the major was selected as the regional-level brand major. In 2011, the doctor’s degree program of the discipline of Chinese Language and Literature was offered. In 2015, the major was selected as the key major at the regional level. In 2019, the major was selected as the candidate for the development of national first-class undergraduate majors.

The major of Chinese International Education which was called Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, began to be offered in 2010. It intends to cultivate the application-oriented professional talents who have knowledge and capacity in Chinese literature, Chinese culture and intercultural communication, who are able to conduct international Chinese language education at different schools, colleges and universities and cultural institutions at home and abroad and who can do the jobs that are related to the cultural communication and exchange to foreign countries at functional departments, foreign trade organizations, press and publishing institutions, public institutions and enterprises. With 10-year development, the major has been continuously improving and become the candidate for the development of national-level first-class undergraduate majors.

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature has fine academic tradition and rich accumulation of humanities. It has formed its own characteristics and advantages in the research of the ethnic literature, languages and cultures in northern borderland of China. Quite a few scholars used to work here. Some influential writers in China have emerged from the department. In recent years, the department has organized its strong research teams to boost the development of its disciplines with the projects supported by NSSFC. And its overall strength has been improved. Adhering to the education principle of “Attaching Importance to Fundamentals and Expanding Knowledge Base”, the college has spared no efforts to cultivate the talents for the Communist Party of China and the country and won the high public praise, which has caused the improvement of the quality of its source of students. Focusing on the basic mission of “Cultivating Talents with Moral Education”, speeding up the construction of high-quality first-class undergraduate education system and strengthening the development and reform of teaching for undergraduates, the college has made remarkable achievements in fostering innovative and versatile talents. Its students have won “Ding Ling Literary Awards” and “Awards for Young Chinese Writers” for their literary creations and made great achievements in such national competitions as “China College Students' 'Internet +' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition”, “‘Challenge Cup’ National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition” “National Competition of Knowledge of Humanities for College Students”. Putting emphasis on the integration of theory and practice, the college now has 4 regional-level internship and practice bases for college students. The graduates of the college have been well-received by all sectors of society with their solid basic professional theories, broad knowledge and horizon, profound humanity attainment, excellent innovative spirit and outstanding capability of expression and writing. Its graduates are working on different fronts like teaching, scientific research, party affairs, government, army, enterprises and public institutions. From them emerged a lot of high-level administrators and scholars who have made great contributions to the political, economic and cultural development of the country and the autonomous region.

The Department of Journalism has 3 undergraduate majors including Journalism, Broadcasting and Anchoring and Network and New Media. The major of Journalism began to be offered in 1986. As the first major of Journalism and Communication in IMAR, it was selected as the regional-level brand major in 2008. In 2009, its Experiment Center for Journalism and Communication was chosen as the regional-level demonstration center for experimental teaching in journalism and communication. In 2019, the major of Journalism was chosen as the candidate for the development of the national-level first-class undergraduate majors. In 2020, “Journalistic Interview and Writing” was selected as one of the first batch of national-level first-class courses. In 2021, “the Innovative Research and Practice in Talent Cultivation by Coordination of Government, Enterprises, Universities and Research Institutions for the Undergraduate Major of Journalism” was approved and supported by MOE as one of the first batch of the practice projects for the research and reform in new liberal arts, and “the Virtual Teaching and Research Section for the Major of Journalism” was selected as one of the first batch of candidates for the development of virtual teaching and research sections by MOE.

The major of Broadcasting and Anchoring began to be offered in 2013. Sticking to the principle of “Consolidating Fundamentals and Emphasizing Practice”, the major intends to cultivate application-oriented and versatile talents who have theoretical knowledge, creation skills and core capability and quality of broadcasting, anchoring and language communication and who can work as announcers, anchors and on-camera reporters in broadcasting, TV, new media, enterprises and public institutions at different levels. The major has a teaching staff of full-time teachers and experts in the field concerned and attaches great importance to training students to have ability to practice. In recent years, the students of this major have won awards in the national anchoring competitions.

The major of Network and New Media was offered based on the major of Journalism and that of Editing and Publishing(Digital Publishing Branch) and began to enroll undergraduate students in 2020. The major establishes an interdisciplinary knowledge system of liberal arts +science and technology + arts, which connect the teaching resources of computer science, mathematics and arts on and off campus and is able to satisfy the demands of the industry concerned for the knowledge and capability of the talents of new media.

The Department of Journalism is uniquely characterized in its practice teaching. It has co-built with national-level and regional-level media groups and internet enterprises 20 bases for practice education, coordinated innovation of universities and research institutions, innovation practice in big data and public opinions and practice in operation and production of products of integrated media. The department cultivates the students’ practical ability and innovative ability with such 10 professional laboratories as the national-level Off-Campus Base for the Practice Education of College Students, regional-level Demonstration Center for the Experiment Teaching in Journalism and Communication and Whole-Media Journalism Laboratory. In recent 5 years, the department has made great achievements in practice teaching, winning successively 2 first prizes and 1 second prize of IMAR Awards for Excellent Teaching Achievements. The students’ innovation teams have participated many times in covering the key themes of MOE and the Publicity of the CPC Committee of IMAR and published many practice creations in national-level and local-level media. Moreover, the teams have won awards in China College Students' “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, “Challenge Cup” National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition and Journalism Awards of IMAR. For years, the satisfaction rate of employers for the graduates of the department has been as high as over 95% and the quality of its graduates have been well-received. A lot of the department’s outstanding graduates are active in the mainstream media and playing the important role in the social development and contributing to the journalism cause of the CPC.
