The School of Physical Science and Technology was founded in 2008, and its predecessor was the Department of Physics which was established in 1957. Following the school motto of “Aspiring in Ambition, Diligent in Study, Broad in Thinking and Firm in Practice” and the students’ cultivation policy of “Consolidating Foundation, Developing Application, Integrating Science and Engineering and Adapting to Market”, the school lays a solid foundation for its students to engage, after their graduation, in basic scientific research, teaching and various work of applied high-tech. The students from the school are characterized by solid professional foundation, high quality and great potential. The school has always adhered to strict, pragmatic, diligent and innovative teaching and study mode and has produced a large pool of outstanding talents (including an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences). Its graduates are found at home and abroad, and many of them have worked their way to leading positions and become the backbone in scientific research institutes or enterprises. They have won good reputation and made great contributions to the economic and social development of China and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR).
The school consists of the Department of Physics and Department of Electronic Science and Technology and offers 4 undergraduate majors including Physics(National Base to Cultivate Talents of Basic Disciplines in Mathematics and Physics), Physics, Applied Physics and Electronic Science and Technology. To meet the needs to cultivate new innovative talents of basic disciplines, the major of Physics and that of Applied Physics have started to enroll students on a discipline basis, i.e. freshmen do not choose a major when they are admitted; they all study the basic courses of physics which are related to Physics(National Base to Cultivate Talents of Basic Disciplines of Mathematics and Physics) after they enter the university; and one and half a year after the students enter the university they begin to be categorized into different majors according to their interest and choice or choose Physics(National Base to Cultivate Talents of Basic Disciplines of Mathematics and Physics).
The school has always been putting talent cultivation at the core of its work and developing its majors and courses. Its major of Physics and that of Electronic Science and Technology have been successively selected as candidates for the development of the national first-class undergraduate majors. It has the National Demonstration Center for Experiment Teaching of Physics, 1 national-level offline first-class course for undergraduates-Statistical Thermodynamics, 1 national-level first-class virtual-simulation experiment teaching course -Virtual-Simulation Experiment of Optimization of Preparation Technology for Industrialized Monocrystal Silicon Solar Battery. Besides, the school has 1 national-level Teaching Team, 1 national-level Excellent Course, 1 national-level Excellent Open Video Course, 1 national-level Excellent Resource-Sharing Course, 6 regional-level Excellent Courses and 4 regional-level Teaching Teams. The school’s faculty members have published 2 textbooks included in the National Textbook Program for Higher Education in 12th Five-Year Plan Period, won 1 second prize of the National Award for Achievements in Teaching and presided over 1 research project for New Engineering supported by the Ministry of Education(MOE)- Exploration and Practice of Upgrading of Major of Electronic Science and Technology with the Help of the Discipline of Physics in Ethnic Minority Areas.
The school has a faculty with noble qualities and high academic level who are led by National Master Teacher and National Model Teacher. Its present faculty totals 85, of which 24 are professors, 26 associate professors, 29 lecturers, 21 PhD student supervisors and 58 master student supervisors. The teachers with doctor’s degree account for 96.2% of the total. Moreover, the school has 7 part-time and distinguished professors and 6 part-time PhD student supervisors. The school has 1 member winning the title of National Master Teacher, 2 winning the title of National Model Teacher, 1 entitled National Model for Teacher’s Ethics, 3 with the title of Experts who enjoy the special allowance of the State Council, 1 with the title of Regional Master Teacher, 4 with the title of Regional Middle-Aged and Young Experts with Outstanding Contributions and 4 winning Nomination Prizes of Baosteel Special Award for Excellent Teachers and Baosteel Award for Excellent Teachers. The school has 1 faculty member on the Advisory Committee on Professional Teaching of MOE and 8 with IMAR Grassland Talent Program and IMAR New Century 321 Talent Program.
The School of Physical Science and Technology offers doctor’s degree program and master’s degree program and post-doctoral program of the discipline of Physics, master’s degree program of Physical Electronics(engineering) and professional master’s degree program of Electronic Information. Theoretical Physics, Condensed State Physics and Biophysics are the regional-level key disciplines. The school now has 3 regional-level key laboratories: Semiconductor Photovoltaic Technology Laboratory, Ion Beam Bioengineering Laboratory and Nano Science and Technology Laboratory.
The school has always adhered to the education principle of attaching equal importance to teaching and research and made outstanding achievements in basic, interdisciplinary and applied basic scientific research like theoretical physics, condensed state physics, biophysics, computational physics. In recent 5 years, its faculty members have published 290 academic research articles in such journals as PRL, PRB, Adv. Energy. Mater. about their original research results. Newly added are 132 research projects, of which 61 are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and whose grants total over RMB 45.21 million. Some of the faculty members won, for their research results, IMAR Natural Science Award and Award for Innovation of Middle-Aged and Young Scientists. Moreover, its faculty members have 26 national patents authorized and 1 academic monograph published.
The School of Physical Science and Technology endeavors to advance the university-enterprise cooperation and industry-university-research collaboration. It gives full play to the strengths of the its disciplines and continues to strengthen its cooperation with Riyue Solar Co; Ltd., Tenghui Photovoltaic Co; Ltd., Baotou Research Institute of Rare Earths, IMAR Institute of Product Quality Inspection, with which the school has established joint laboratories, carried out substantial scientific and technological research, improved the transformation of research results and boosted the interaction between its disciplines and research and industries. The school and Riyue Solar Co; Ltd., have jointly got the project of “Development and Optimization of Efficient N-PERT Solar Cells” approved and supported by Hohhot Bureau of Science and Technology and the project of “Development and Industrialization of New Copper-Based Intermediate Band Solar Cells - N-PERT Solar Cells” supported by the Scientific-and-Technological-Innovation-Guiding Fund of IMAR(with grant of RMB 6.9 million, 6 million of which is raised by the enterprise.). And the school helped Riyue Solar Co; Ltd. complete the research of the sub-project concerned and develop the battery piece of N-PERT solar cells with 4 main grids and assisted the enterprise build a mini power station with n-type bifacial generating structure of 17.1 KW. The school also cooperated with IMAR Institute of Product Quality Inspection to get 1 school-led project of local standard-Review and Acceptance Standards for Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Power Station and organized the drafting of the technology standards.
