In January, 2002, the School of Public Management was established by Inner Mongolia University(IMU) through adjusting the layout of its disciplines concerned and integrating the relevant resources to adapt to the adjustment of the national economic and social development strategies as well as to the new situation of the economic and social development in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR).
The School of Public Management consists of the Department of Administrative Management, Department of Labor and Social Security, Department of Land Resources Management and Department of Political Science. It has 5 scientific research platforms: IMAR Research Center for Emergency Management, Inner Mongolia Research Base for Social Governance and Innovation, Research Center for Big Data in Ethnic Minority Areas, Inner Mongolia Research Center for Land Issues and IMU Research Center for Social Security. Besides, the school has such teaching and research supporting sections as reference room, E-Government Laboratory and Psychology Laboratory. Its major of Administrative Management and that of Labor and Social Security have been chosen as the candidates for the development of the national first-class undergraduate majors and the major of Political Science and Administration as the candidate for the development of the regional-level first-class undergraduate majors. The school offers the doctor’s degree program and master’s degree program of the discipline of Public Management and the program of Master of Public Administration. The school offers 4 undergraduate majors: Administrative Management, Labor and Social Security, Land Resources Management and Political Science and Administration.
As of September 2023, the school has 62 staff members including 12 professors, 15 associate professors, 22 lecturers and 13 administrators and teaching assistants. Of its faculty members 8 are PhD student supervisors and 30 master student supervisors. And over 80% of its teachers have doctor’s degrees. The school has appointed 2 senior professors of the discipline of Public Management. Currently, the school has a total number of 1400 students, of whom 737 are undergraduates, 102 master students, and 531 MPA students and 30 PhD students.
Since its establishment, the School of Public Management has invariably adhered to its education principle of “Based in Borderland and Satisfying National Needs” and put talent cultivation and discipline development at the core of its work. As a result, its education level has been improving. The discipline of Public Administration is the regional-level first-class development discipline and Administrative Management the regional-level key development discipline. The MPA program is one of the first batch of MPA programs in ethnic minority areas in borderland and one of the second batch of national MPA programs. Of the undergraduate majors offered by the school, the majors of Administrative Management and that of Political Science and Administration are the regional-level brand majors
Based on the actual economic and social development in IMAR and the country, the school attaches great importance to giving full play to its interdisciplinary advantages and comprehensive advantages and tries its best to carry out the scientific research with ethnic and regional characteristics. The school devotes itself to the modernization of IMAR, continuously improves its ability of social service, cooperates extensively with the local governmental departments, and cultivates all kinds of public administration talents at all levels to make important contributions to the sound and rapid development of economy and society in IMAR and the country. The school proactively engages in academic exchanges, establishes cooperative relations with the schools concerned of more than 20 universities at home and abroad, such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, City University of Hong Kong and University of Missouri, and attends and hosts national and regional academic exchanges actively.
In its future development, the School of Public Management will endeavor to give full play to the advantages brought about by IMU as the key development university listed under “211 Project”, the university listed under the Project for the Improvement of Comprehensive Strength of the Universities in Central and Western Area of China, the university co-built by the Ministry of Education and IMAR People’s Government and the development university listed under “Double First-Class” Initiative and try to build itself into a teaching and research base for the discipline of public administration and that of political science which is regionally superb and nationally influential, a base for training high-quality talents, a significant consulting base for decisions made by the Communist Party of China departments and government departments and a key base for academic exchanges at home and abroad.
