The predecessor of the School of Economics and Management of Inner Mongolia University(IMU) is the Department of Economics which was established in 1978. With more than four decades of efforts, the school has made rapid progress in all aspects and become an important base for cultivating senior economic management talents in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR)and the western region of China. In 2023, its discipline of Applied Economics was selected as one of the candidates for the development of regional-level “first-class disciplines”.

The School of Economics and Management has two disciplines of Economics and Management and consists of the Department of Economics, Department of Business Administration, Department of Finance and Department of Accounting. It offers doctor’s degree program of the discipline of Applied Economics, master’s degree programs of the disciplines of Applied Economics and Business Administration and 3 professional master’s degree programs of MBA(including EMBA), MPAcc and MF.

The school has 4 majors selected as the candidates for the development of the national-level first-class undergraduate majors including Economics, Business Administration, Finance and Accounting, 2 national-level first-class courses for undergraduate students, 1 regional-level first-class course for virtual-simulation experiment teaching, 1 regional-level demonstration center for experiment teaching, 1 practice base for integration of industry and education, 1 teacher with the title of “Regional College Master Teacher ” and 1 teacher with the title of “Regional Excellent Teacher”.

The school has 2205 students, of which 37 are PhD students, 146 academic master students, 745 professional master students and 1277 undergraduate students.

The school has a staff of 111, of which 91 are full-time teachers. Among all the teachers are 17 professors, 18 associate professors and 80 teachers with doctor’s degree. Besides, the school has 1 teacher with the title of Expert who enjoys the special allowance of the State Council, 1 with “National One Hundred, One Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Program”, 1 with “Program for Support of Outstanding Talents in the New Century” of the Ministry of Education(MOE), 1 with the title of National Leading Talent in Accounting, 1 who won Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR) Award for Outstanding Talents, 1 with the title of “Regional Expert with Outstanding Contributions”, 6 with “Grassland Talent Program”, 2 Teams of Innovative Talents, 1 Regional College Innovation Team, 1 with the title of “Young Outstanding Leading Talent of Colleges in Science and Technology in IMAR”, 6 with the title of “Young Talent in Science and Technology” and 1 winning the support of Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation.

The school has 1 regional-level key research base for philosophy and social sciences-Inner Mongolia Sustainable Economic Development Research Base, 2 regional-level key research bases of colleges for humanities and social sciences-the Center for the Survey and Research of Time Utilization in China and IMAR Research Center for Geoeconomic Data Engineering Technology, IMAR Academy of Quality Development co-built by the school and IMAR Administration for Market Regulation, 6 regional-level research platforms including IMAR Think Tank Alliance for Research of Economic Strategies for New Energies and IMAR Think Tank Alliance for Research of Population Strategies which are co-operated by the school and Inner Mongolia Federation of Social Sciences Circles and 6 university-level and school-level research platforms including China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Research Institute. Besides, the school co-constructs the Data Alliance of Chinese Universities with such universities as Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, China-Russia Joint Laboratory of Behavioral Economics with Ural Federal University, Think Tank Alliance for Dual Transformation of Greenization and Digitalization by the National Energy Bases of China with such universities as Fudan University and Inner Mongolia Academy of Strategies for Energy and Carbon Neutrality with Fudan University.

In the past 5 years, the school has got 173 research projects supported, of which 106 are supported by the organizations representing the government of different levels to take charge of scientific research affairs and 61 supported by local governments, enterprises and public institutions. Of theses projects, 14 are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 by the National Social Science Fund of China, 1 key sub-project of the national social science bases, 6 projects of humanities and social sciences supported by MOE. The grant of all the research projects total RMB 25 million. In recent 5 years, the faculty members of the school have published over 270 academic articles and 47 books. In the latest 3 IMAR Government Awards for Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences, the school’s faculty have won 4 first prizes, 15 second prizes and 17 third prizes. They have submitted 22 high-level consulting reports to the government, some of which have been given, by the major leaders of IMAR Government, the instructions and comments.

The School of Economics and Management has conducted extensive academic exchanges and cooperations with such universities as Arizona State University, Aichi University, the University of Warwick, Ural Federal University, Buryat State University, the National University of Mongolia, and Mongolian University of Science and Technology. The school has jointly carried out undergraduate degree programs with the University of South Carolina, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Free University of Brussels, and GISMA University of Applied Sciences, and academic visit programs with Oriel College of the University of Oxford. It has successively cooperated with Inner Mongolia Branch of the Construction Bank of China and the Survey and Research Center for China Household Finance of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics to carry out such brand social practice activities as “Benefiting the People with Wisdom of Finance to Revitalize the Rural Areas” and “Survey of Chinese Household Finance” and won the honorary title for 3 years in a row of “Excellent Volunteers Service Team” at the regional level. The school has signed the memorandums of cooperation with China Securities Regulatory Commission, Shanghai Stock Exchange and Guorong Securities and carries out multi-level internship activities of students with Shanghai Anjing Consultancy and M-Grass.

At present, the School of Economics and Management is at the critical stage of innovation and integration. It is summing up the past experiences in teaching and scientific research. Following the school motto of “Economics for Pragmatic Use and Management for Understanding of Truth”, the School of Economics and Management has carried out philosophy innovation, institution innovation and mechanism innovation and tried, in a more open manner, more scientific attitude and more pragmatic style, to become a school of economics and management which is superb in western ethnic minority areas of China, influential in China and top in the world.
