Founded in 2007, the School of Ethnology and Sociology is located on the north campus of Inner Mongolia University(IMU). The school consists of the Department of Ethnology, Department of Sociology, Department of Social Work and the Ethnic Museum and offers three undergraduate majors: Ethnology, Sociology and Social Work. The school offers the doctor’s degree program and master’s degree program of the discipline of Ethnology. It also offers master’s degree program of Sociology under the discipline of Ethno-Sociology for. In 2015, the school began to enroll postgraduate students of Master of Social Work (MSW). Currently, the school has a staff of 33 including 29 teachers and 4 administrators and teaching assistants. Of all the teachers 7 are professors, 11 associate professors and 11 lecturers, and 27 teachers have doctoral degrees accounting for 93.1% of all the teachers. Of 24 teachers who graduated from the universities at home, 15 graduated from universities other than IMU. 5 teachers graduated from the universities abroad. And 15 teachers have the experience of studying abroad and overseas exchanges.
Now, the school has 445 full-time undergraduate students, 200 master students(97 of whom are the students of professional degree program), 51 doctor students and 10 international students..
The research institutions of the school include the Cultivation Base for Research of Forging a Strong Sense of Community for Chinese Nation supported by the United Front Department of the Communist Party of China(CPC) Central Committee, Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education(MOE) and National Ethnic Affairs Commission, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR) Research and Training Center for Social Workers and Hohhot Research Base for Community Construction Theory. The school has the Laboratory of Visual Anthropology, Laboratory of Social Work(co-built by IMAR and the MOE), and Laboratory of Ethnic Psychology Research, and practice teaching centers. The school has an ethnic museum(which is IMAR Patriotism Education Base, Hohhot City Base for Ethnic Unity and Progress Education and Hohhot City Base for Science Popularization Education)and a reference room with a collection of over 10,000 books.
The discipline of Ethnology of the school has been rated as B+ in the 5th round of discipline assessment of MOE. The school now has 2 undergraduate majors selected as the candidates for the development of the national first-class undergraduate majors-Ethnology and Sociology, the major of Social Work as the candidate for the development of regional first-class undergraduate majors, the major of Ethnology as regional-level brand major, the course of Ecological Anthropology as regional Excellent Course and 3 courses as regional-level first-class courses. Moreover, the school has two university-level Excellent Teaching Teams. And the school has successively established cooperations with universities at home and abroad like University of Cambridge, the National University of Mongolia, Peking University, Xiamen University, Lanzhou University and Minzu University of China.
