Being the first department of electronics among the universities in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR), the Department of Electronics of Inner Mongolia University(IMU) which was founded in 1979 was the predecessor of the School of Electronic Information Engineering. The major of Communication Engineering and that of Automation were added respectively in 1994 and 1995. In March, 2008, the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Department of Automation merged to form the School of Electronic Information Engineering which has the discipline of information and communication engineering and that of control science and technology.

The school consists of 3 departments-the Department of Electronic Information Science and Technology, Department of Communication Engineering and Department of Automation and 2 administration centers-Administration Center for Experiment Teaching and Practice Center for College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship. It offers 3 undergraduate majors: Electronic Information Science and Technology which is the candidate for the development of the national first-class undergraduate majors, Communication Engineering and Automation which are the candidates for the development of the regional first-class undergraduate majors. The school has 1 regional-level key development discipline-“Signal and Information Processing”, 1 regional-level experiment teaching demonstration center-“Experiment Teaching Center for Electronic Information Technology” and 1 regional-level engineering research center-“IMAR Research Center for Electronic Engineering Technology”. The school offers the master’s degree program of the discipline of “Information and Communication Engineering”, 1 professional master’s degree program of Electronic Information which includes 2 fields of “Communication Engineering” and “Control Engineering” and 1 regional-level candidate for the development of the College of Modern Industry.

The school has a staff of 58, of which 9 are professors, 5 university-appointed research fellows, 17 associate professors, 3 PhD student supervisors, 31 master student supervisors, and 34 teachers with doctor’s degree which account for 73.9% of all the full-time teachers. The school has 1 faculty member with the title of Secondary-Level Talent with the Program for 321 Talents in a New Century, 2 entitled Cultivating Candidates for Distinguished Young Scholars of the Natural Science Foundation of IMAR, 3 with the title of Young Scientific and Technological Talents at Universities in IMAR, 2 entitled IMAR Rising Star Teachers and 1 regional-level Teaching Team. The school now has 1094 students, of which 634 are undergraduate students and 460 master students.

The school has always put high-quality undergraduate education at the core and adhered to the education philosophy of comprehensive improvement of students’ ability in innovation and practice. Following the school motto of “Virtue for Perfection and Diligent Study for Innovation”, targeting information engineering industry, basing itself in Inner Mongolia and aiming at the latest scientific and technological developments, the school intends to cultivate application-oriented professional talents who have solid foundation of basic professional knowledge, systematically grasp the basic skills and means which are needed in electronic information engineering, who are well-trained in scientific thinking, scientific experiments and scientific research and who have stronger innovative spirit and ability of practice and possess international horizons, quality of liberal arts and good health. The school has become an important base to cultivate high-level talents in electronic information.

Since 2020, the school have begun to enroll undergraduate students on the basis of the discipline of electronic information. Based on the education and teaching philosophy of “General Education, Category-Based Teaching and Advocacy for Exploration”, the school has brought into being the study and teaching mode of “1.5+2.5”, i.e. its sophomore students begin in their second term to study their major courses; and the students choose their majors according to what they are interested in, which fully secure the students’ needs in their interest, ability improvement and development of their future career. Based on the characteristics of the training of talents in engineering, the school has carried out the tutorship, made Grassland Eagle Program for Training Innovative Talents and created better conditions of studies and research for its students. The “Home for Innovation” of the school is an on-campus scientific and technological practice base for students which is organized and administered by students and where students love to carry out their extracurricular activities. Relying on the base, the students of the school have carried out various scientific and technological activities, which made the students win the prizes at the international, national or regional level. In 2019, the “Home for Innovation” was selected as Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Demonstration Base for Popularization of Science and in 2020 IMAR Education Base for Popularization of Science. Being greatly popular with the students and strongly influential at IMU, it is a stage for innovation and practice where the students of the school can fully show themselves and pursue their dreams.

The School of Electronic Information Engineering has cultivated talents with moral education, tried to boost the reform in education and teaching, sped up the improvement on the undergraduate education and fully improve its ability to cultivate talents. The school now has 5 regional-level first-class undergraduate courses and 8 university-level first-class undergraduate courses. The initial employment rate of its graduates has been taking lead at the university and the rate of its students who succeed in their attempt for master’s degree programs staying 25% of the total. Its graduates have been well-received and highly-valued in society. The faculty members of the school have carried out the scientific research on smart testing and processing of information, mobile internet and internet of things, processing and understanding of visual information, wireless communication and networks and mode recognition and smart control, and made outstanding achievements, few of which have achieved the advanced level at home. In terms of serving the economic and social development of the autonomous region, the school has focused on such regional strategic development targets as grassland ecological animal husbandry and ecological security shield, given full play to the advantages it has in its disciplines and strengthened joint research to result in prominent distinctive features and cutting edges of its disciplines. The postgraduates of the school have a very good employment prospect and their initial employment rate has taken lead among the postgraduates of the university in recent years.
