Founded in 1999, the Foreign Languages College has evolved from its predecessor—the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of Inner Mongolia University(IMU) which was established in 1978. The college consists of the Department of English Language, the Department of Japanese Language, the Department of Russian Language and the Department of College English Teaching. English, Japanese and Russian majors constitute the undergraduate programs of the college and the languages being taught at the college include English, Japanese, Russian, German and French, which makes the college the one with the largest variety of languages and majors among its counterparts in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR). In 2019, the major of English was selected as one of the first batch of candidates for the development of the national-level first-class undergraduate majors. In 2020, the major of Japanese was chosen as one candidate for the development of regional-level first-class undergraduate majors. In 2021, both the major of Japanese and that of Russian were selected as the candidates for the development of the national-level first-class undergraduate majors. The college offers master’s degree program of the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, which consists of 4 master’s degree programs of the sub-disciplines of English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The college also offers professional master’s degree programs of Translation and Interpretation including 4 sub-programs: English Translation, English Interpretation, Japanese Translation and Russian Translation. The college has 1 national-level first-class course, 5 regional-level first-class online, offline and online-and-offline integrated courses. The college has 10 research platforms and centers for the studies of regions and countries like “Research Base for Foreign Languages and Literature”.
The college has 121 staff members, of which 55 teachers are with the Department of English, Department of Japanese and Department of Russian and 49 with the Department of College English Teaching. Among all its teachers, there are 9 professors, 35 associate professors, 2 PhD student supervisors, 32 master student supervisors, 38 teachers with doctor degree, 67 teachers with master’s degree and 3 PhD students. Besides, the college also has 7 foreign teachers of English or Japanese.
The college has stable cooperation with the universities in Britain, Russia and Japan. Through the programs of China Scholarship Program or programs between IMU and foreign universities, the college annually sends its undergraduate students and fresh graduates to the foreign universities for short-term exchange or further study for master’s degree programs or doctor’s degree programs. The college also carries out exchanges with other domestic universities. It sends its teachers and students to the universities in the provinces other than Inner Mongolia to participate in such exchange programs as “Hand in Hand” and “Development Alliance of Foreign Languages among Liaoning Province, Jilin Province, Heilongjiang Province and IMAR”.
The college encourages its students to actively get involved in the training programs of innovation and business startup for college students and fosters and improves its students’ ability for innovation and practice in scientific research. With the training programs of innovation and business startup for college students and advancement of the construction programs for internship and practice, the college intends to cultivate the innovation-application-oriented versatile talents who have solid foundation of foreign languages, fine cultural accomplishments, ability of intercultural communication and spirit of innovation and practice. At present, the college has signed the agreements on internship and practice with other institutions other than IMU to provide places for students’ internship and practice.
The Foreign Languages College has always been adhering to its education principle of “cultivating talents of foreign languages who have strong concern over family and country, international horizon, solid professional foundation, extensive knowledge and innovative spirit in a new era” and who can proficiently use foreign languages in teaching, translation and interpretation, management and research in such fields as education and scientific research. The graduates from the college are found not only in China but also in many other countries and regions across the world, who are playing important roles in the economic development and cultural exchanges both for the country and the autonomous region.
