Colleges & Schools

The School of Mathematical Sciences was founded in 2008 on the basis of its predecessor, the Department of Mathematics established when Inner Mongolia University(IMU) was founded in 1957. It offers doctor’s degree program of the discipline of Mathematics, post-doctoral program of the discipline of Mathematics, master’s degree program of the discipline of Mathematics and professional master’s degree program of Applied Statistics. And the discipline of Applied Mathematics has been selected as one of the first batch of regional-level key disciplines.

At present the school consists of 4 departments, namely the Department of Fundamental Mathematics, Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Information and Computing Science and Department of College Mathematics Teaching and Research, 9 grassroots-level teaching organizations including Teaching and Research Section of Analysis and Teaching Center for Mathematical Modelling, 1 Laboratory of Scientific Computing and Information, 1 reference room and 1 Information Center for Mathematical Science Literature.

The school offers 4 undergraduate majors, namely Basic Science of Mathematics and Physics(Base for Mathematics and Physics, Mathematics), Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science and Statistics, of which Basic Science of Mathematics and Physics(Base for Mathematics and Physics, Mathematics) is the national base to cultivate the teaching and research talents of basic science in Science of Mathematics and Physics; Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is the candidate for the development of the national first-class undergraduate majors, national major with distinctive characteristics and pilot development major for comprehensive major reform supported by the Ministry of Education(MOE); Information and Computing Science is the candidate for the development of the national first-class undergraduate majors and regional-level brand major and Statistics is the candidate for the development of the regional first-class undergraduate majors.

The school has put the talent cultivation at the core of its work and persistently developed its majors and courses. Now it has 2 national-level First-Class Courses, 2 national-level Excellent Courses, 2 national-level Excellent Open Video Courses, 1 national-level Resource-Sharing Course, 1 MOE Virtual Teaching and Research Section, 1 national-level “Teaching Team for the Courses of Mathematical Analysis” and has won 2 second prizes of the National Awards for Teaching Achievements.

The school now has a faculty who have high quality and solid professional foundation and devote themselves to their work. Currently, the school has 72 staff members, of which 66 are full-time teachers, 1 experiment technician and 5 administrative staff members. Of 66 teachers 20 are professors, 21 associate professors, 16 PhD student supervisors, 39 master student supervisors and 55 teachers with doctor’s degree accounting for 83.3% of the total of its teachers. The school has 2 faculty members winning the National Award for Master Teachers at Universities, 1 listed as member on the Advisory Committee on Teaching of MOE, 1 included as member on the Division of Mathematics and Physics of the Science and Technology Committee of MOE, 10 with the title of Experts who enjoy the special allowance of the State Council, 1 with the title of the National Middle-Aged and Young Expert with Outstanding Contributions, 1 winning the National May Day Medal, 1 selected as candidate for the honor of the National Model for Teaching and Education, 4 winning National Baosteel Award for Excellent Teachers, 1 winning MOE Award for Excellent Young Teachers, 1 winning the Fok Ying Tung Award for Young Teachers and 7 with the title of IMAR Middle-Aged and Young Expert with Outstanding Contributions.

The School of Mathematical Sciences has been following the principle to attach equal importance to teaching and research, helping the development of teaching with scientific research and integrating the latest research achievements into the routine teaching. The faculty members of the school have over 200 research projects at or above provincial or ministerial level approved and supported whose grants total more than RMB 29 million. Of these projects, 90 are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The faculty of the school has published over 1300 research articles and nearly 40 textbooks and academic monographs, won 16 science and technology awards at or above the level of province or ministry and had 5 scientific and technological achievements appraised.

Following the tradition of strict and serious research and fine teaching and studying modes, the school has attached great importance to talent cultivation. For over 60 years since the founding of IMU, the School of Mathematical Sciences has produced nearly 5600 excellent talents for the country and autonomous region. The graduates from the school are found at home and abroad and many of them have become prestigious experts, scholars, high-ranking leaders and well-known entrepreneurs.
