General Introduction to the Graduate Education of Inner Mongolia University

Inner Mongolia University was established in 1957, the earliest founded comprehensive university in the minority regions after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It plays a very important role and occupies a special position in the layout of the national higher education. Graduate Education of Inner Mongolia University began in 1962 and the University was granted to confer doctoral degrees in 1984. Being awarded the national key comprehensive university by the Ministry of Education of China in 1978, it was listed as one of 100 universities of the "211 Project" universities for key construction and development in 1997. It became a university jointly organized by the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Ministry of Education in 2004 and was officially selected as one of the universities for the “Plan of Enhancing the Comprehensive Strength of Universities in the Midwest” in 2012. Graduate management agency of Inner Mongolia University can trace its history back to the second half of the 20th century, when the university created the Graduate Office in 1978 and began to enroll graduate students. In 1988, the University established the Graduate Affairs Office, which was the earliest division level system of graduate management work among all colleges and universities in Inner Mongolia. Then the Graduate School was established in March 2001 and the Graduate School was officially established in 2010.

Inner Mongolia University currently has 7 primary-level and 3 secondary-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees (excluding coverage of primary-level disciplines); 26 primary-level and 6 secondary-level disciplines authorized to confer master’s degrees (excluding coverage of primary-level disciplines); 2 secondary-level disciplines authorized to confer master’s degrees in independent additional directory. Besides, the University offers 10 programs for professional master’s degrees (Master of Engineering Degree covers 7 engineering fields). At present, the university has 2 national key disciplines and 1 national prospective key discipline. There are also 18 regional-level key disciplines and 8 regional-level prospective key disciplines. In 2012, several disciplines of IMU including biology, ecology and Chinese language and literature ranked into the top 1/3 nationwide in the third round of the national subject assessment organized by the Degree and Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, which highlighted the rapid promotion of our level of discipline and academic influence.

Through nearly 60 years of development, Inner Mongolia University has already developed a staff team of graduate supervisors with high moral character, rigorous scholarship and high-level effectiveness. Inner Mongolia University currently has about 142 doctoral supervisors and 605 master supervisors. In 2014, 3 professors were selected as members of Discipline Review Group of State Department. Currently, 2 owned the titles of "Outstanding Professional and Technical Personnel", 2 distinguished professors of Cheung Kong Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, 5 double hired academicians, 1 member of social sciences commission of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of science and technology commission of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the Ministry of Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the Committee of Experts on the Development of the Ministry of Education and Professional Settings, 18 members of the Steering Committee for the teaching of Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the Ministry of Agriculture Science and Technology Committee, and 1 member of the Steering Committee on Library and Information Work of the Ministry of Education. 8 of the faculty members have been designated as “national middle-aged experts with outstanding contribution”, 71 awarded subsidies by the State Council, 5 chosen to for the “National Millions of Talent Project", 13 for "Program for New Century Excellent Talents" of the Ministry of Education, 2 for "National High-level Personnel of Special Support Program (" People Plan ")" and 1 for "National First Youth Top-notch Talent Support Program".

After the construction of the "211 Project" and “Plan of Enhancing the Comprehensive Strength of Universities in the Midwest”, rapid progress has been made in every area of graduate education of Inner Mongolia University, such as discipline construction, faculty team building and cultivation of learning, etc. In the recent 5 years, more than 400 students have received their doctorates and over 10,000 have received their master’s degrees from the University. Up to now, Inner Mongolia University has over 6,000 registered graduate students. The first doctoral dissertation of the University won National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in 1999 and two doctoral theses were nominated for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in 2009 and 2011 respectively. The University itself has cultivated many outstanding representatives of graduate students, such as Prof. Zhang Jie, the President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Foreign Associate of the American Academy of Sciences, the Foreign Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Third World Academy of Sciences, Academician of the German Academy of Sciences, and the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and another excellent representative Prof. Zhao Jincai, Doctoral supervisor, the Researcher of Institute of Chemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Inner Mongolia University will always uphold the guiding principle for running a university of "double task", further promote the reform system of graduate training pattern, and take the development road of "Quality, Connotation and Characteristics". IMU’s goal is to cultivate more top talents with creativity and practical abilities for the nation and the autonomous region and work with unremitting dedication to realize the goal of ranking itself among the first-class universities.
